Beth, thank you for your comment. I really empathize with your efforts to help children "learn how to learn" and the difficulties in finding ways to transform teachers in authentic learners and 'midwifes' so that they can themselves help children become the leaders of tomorrow. I have spent the last year, going deeper in my own learning and transformation with the help of my friend and colleague Andrew Campbell. I would be happy to pursue the conversation with you if you are interested. Feel free to drop me an email at your convenience.

Best wishes for your work: it is so much needed!

I am leading a Founders Group for an alternative learning environment/approach for children. Our mission is is helping kids "learn how to learn" in a deeper way that is in alignment with your essay and encourages divergent thinking. I've been reading books and articles on school reform and the fear over the lack of 21st Century preparation and nothing fits better than what I just read. I see so little in the way of preparing teachers or "midwives" for facilitating this process. It is pure synthesis of our emotions (thoughts), cognitive and bodily wisdom as well as this idea of emergent learning - and flashes of understanding indicating that whole learning is more physics that linear equations.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Hello Beatrice! How are you?!
Thank you for this post--I agree wholeheartedly, and only wish that this perspective were more represented within my department, DUSP. I'm wondering if you would be willing to re-post this article on the blog of the Community Innovators' Lab (CoLab) at MIT? (http://colabradio.mit.edu/) If so, I'll contact Alexa (the site admin) and let her know that you'd like to post, and she can get in touch with you about how. I would love for more people in the Urban Planning program at MIT to be exposed to this way of understanding cities. On a personal note, I'd love to hear what you're up to!

salutations cordiales.

Glad to get an overview of Living Systems, makes total sense, I've been trying to wrap my head around the Pattern Language and develop more essence to the things I create. On a city scale this is very exciting stuff and can of course happen from the bottom up or the top down, people just need to have some emotional check-in's once in a while and objectively observe and engage with their space, instead of just passing by.
Makes me think of things that were going through my head while on my way to work in SF for those years, very Situationist and feeling that we need to have art in everything we do spend a moment and dérive (a concept I enjoy) - you know have a design that allows people to be drawn to the places that make sense to them on deeper levels... quite possibly leading to open spaces where people can engage with each other with a spirit they might have forgotten...Thanks for the stimulation to rethink about the space we live in!

Thanks for this piece. More depth than I feel capable of participating in at the moment. However, all of it rings so clearly for me. I like to think. And I like to imagine how I might shift my thinking, and see what shows up in my world.

I recently was presented with the idea that all "reality" is just history of past thoughts. So imagination becomes more and more attractive. To shift time and space to connect past imaginations to thoughts and then to the things of "reality" that I can touch, taste, smell, feel, see. Not the way I was taught, nor the way I learned for a long time. I like this way better.

Thanks for sharing your explorations.

Hi Beatrice,
Yes, this is a topic that frustrates me at various times. I will find an interest and research, research, research until I am so full. Then throw away the research and build. In the past, I was under the toxic directive that the first build had to be perfect, or at least very effective.

I am recovering from that perspective after many applications and now give myself and others the room for trial and error and trial and error. I guess it is only error if I quit when trapped in the thought that it will be done.

I do this with laundry, hair, nails, dishes. Didn't I just do that a little while ago? Why do I have to do it again? Didn't I just water the garden? Why does it need more? Didn't I just pay the phone bill? Didn't I ride my bike yesterday?

Thanks for the topic and your perspective.

As an aside, I met Terra Anderson from BGI a few weeks ago at Servas conference. She spoke very highly of you.
Blessings on the journey.
